Teeth whitening is a popular option for many people who have noticed that their teeth are no longer as white as they once were. The darkening and staining of teeth is a natural part of aging, and certain lifestyle factors such as tobacco, tea, coffee, wine, and soda can speed up this process, resulting in a brown, yellow, or greyish hue on the enamel. Even healthy foods such as berries, leafy green vegetables, curry, turmeric, peppers, pomegranates, and beetroot can leave colour deposits on the teeth.
At Metro Pointe Dental Clinic, we offer two professional teeth whitening options: in-office and take-home teeth bleaching systems. Before beginning any type of tooth whitening, our dentists will evaluate the oral health of each patient to ensure comfort and safety. A dental cleaning prior to the whitening appointment will also remove tartar from the teeth that can interfere with the teeth whitening process.
In-office teeth whitening can provide an improvement of several shades in a single sitting and can be repeated up to four times in a single appointment based on the patient’s desired shade. Please note that there can be sensitivity during and after this procedure.
Take-home teeth whitening involves a digital scan of your teeth to create customized bleaching trays, a demonstration and instruction on use, a determination of the proper teeth whitening gel, and a before-and-after shade measurement to monitor results. Patients can retain their whitening trays for future touch-ups if needed. The take-home whitening kit is also recommended for patients who do in-office whitening as after care and maintenance.
For patients with sensitive teeth, desensitizing agents and fluoride application can be used to help reduce sensitivity during the teeth whitening process. For patients with stain-resistant teeth or those who have suffered trauma, porcelain veneers may be a more effective option to cover the tooth completely and achieve the most aesthetic results. If you are interested in teeth whitening, we invite you to contact us to make an appointment and determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.
